AKMS Memorial Scholarship - 2009

Ariel S. Hyams is the 2009 Alaska Masters Swimming Memorial Scholarship recipient.  Her background, achievements and lifestyle exemplify one worthy of receiving this award.  Academically, her 3.97 grade point average is comprised of numerous honors and advance placement courses.  Her superb references included one from the high school Social Studies Department Chairperson calling her "the best of the best" and another from her age-group coach who also has had the pleasure of employing Ariel in the Swim America program.

Ariel started swimming when she was 6 years old, became involved in USA swimming, and achieved a multitude of awards while competing in high school swimming.    She is a member of the Aurora Swim Team, was a state finalist all four years of high school swimming and was selected swim team captain her sophomore, junior, and senior year. In 2009, she was named the Most Valuable Female at West High School.  Her age-group coach characterized her as a team player, a great leader, and a person who "has the ability to pass on a love for the sport" to her students.  She praised her for ability to lead by example and a desire to give back to the swimming community in many ways such as working as the secretary of Alaska Swimming and volunteering at novice and Masters swim meets.

Ariel has an extensive record of civic involvement including volunteering with Special Olympics, Spanish/English tutoring, involvement in Model United Nations, involvement in We the People, an organization with the goal of promoting civic competence and responsibility among students, and involvement in the Anchorage School district Gifted Mentorship.  She has been  a member of the National Honor Society for three years, and has been the People to People Student Ambassador International 9th through 12th grade.   People to People prepares students and professionals for success in a globalized world through international travel and positive, life-changing educational experiences

In her essay about how swimming has enriched her life, Ariel said, "I've learned the importance of dedication, hard work, time management, perseverance, respect and believing in myself."   We, the Committee also believe in Ariel and feel that she represents the epitome of what our scholarship represents to the world of swimming
