January 1-Hour Postal - The AIM StoryOn January 23rd and 28th, AIM (Aleutian Island Masters) members participated in the USMS One Hour Postal National Championships. The annual event is held January 1st through 31st, and is sponsored by Tamalpais Aquatic Masters in San Rafael, California and sanctioned by Pacific Masters Swimming for United States Masters Swimming (USMS). The objective of the postal meet is to swim as far as possible in one hour. Volunteers were assigned to each swimmer to tally and record times for each lap. Results were sent in to USMS and are being compared to other swimmers doing the same event across the country. Some people do the One Hour Postal event for competition, while others do it for fitness. Men and women compete separately in age groups of five-year increments: 18 - 24, 25 - 29, 30 - 34, etc. The recorded distance (total yards swum) submitted to USMS determines the order of finish. The top 10 finishers in each age group will receive USMS Long Distance National Championship medals. First place finishers will also receive a USMS championship patch. National rankings have yet to be determined.
AIM is a City of Unalaska Department of Parks, Culture, and Recreation Aquatics Center program and Alaska Masters Swimming team under USMS. AIM is coached by Carl Jaynes, Engineering Technician / GIS Manager with the City of Unalaska Department of Public Works and former Alaska high school state swimming champion. Special thanks to the Unalaska City School District high school swim team members, Bianca Barrera, Eric Do, Shayla Shaishnikoff, Asia Vernon, and Samuel Winters, for serving as volunteer counters and timers for the local event.
Registration for the 2010 Pennock Challenge will be available online next spring.
You can help us promote masters swimming by making sure our new poster (compliments to Rick Abbott) is displayed at every pool in the state. We are particularly interested in displaying the poster at high school meets this fall and USA Swimming meets throughout the year. You can print a small version of the poster on an ordinary printer (8.5 by 11 inch), or I can send you a larger poster by mail if you send me your mailing address. You can help out swimming and aquatic sports in general by printing and displaying a People for Pools sign in your car.
